Abdominal (Andrew Bernstein) is a rapper from Toronto, Ontario, best known for his extraordinary breath control and hyper creative, stream-of-consciousness flows. He describes his style of rap as ‘acoustic’, gravitating towards the old school roots of hip-hop.
Abdominal began his career in the late 1990s, collaborating with the likes of DJ Fase and DJ Format, touring the UK together as part of Jurassic 5’s European tour. His first solo album, Escape from the Pigeon Hole, was released in 2007 in the United Kingdom by Antidote Records. That same year, his song “Pedal Pusher”, won the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for the best song in Canadian Independent Music by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.
In 2012, he released Sitting Music along with his band, “Abdominal and The Obliques”, which features no sampling and relies entirely on live instruments. In 2015, Abdominal and his mother were featured at TEDxFortMcMurray in a talk called “Courage: Why I Wrote a Rap Song with my Mom”, becoming the first duo to present and rap on stage at a TEDx Conference. Abdominal’s latest releases are the LP Still Hungry with DJ Format in 2017, and the Gone Fishin’ EP with the Obliques in 2019.
