Lyrics
We’re in the dawn of a misinformation age.
All the more crucial then, words on a page
Harder to be edited, deleted or hacked
The printed word on paper, presenting the facts.
Democracy, as recently exhibited,
Not nearly as resilient as we once considered it.
The internet, in large part where this battle’s being waged
Misinformation in this digital age
Spreading like wildfire courtesy of bad actors,
Russia, China mobilizing armies of hackers.
Journalists across the globe being banned
In countries from Vietnam to Iran.
Hell, even the 45th president
Polarized the population with his unprecedented
Pack of lies, tweeted incessantly.
Begging the question, how do we effectively
Combat this disturbing trend we see?
Freedom of the press our best weaponry
In this fight to preserve civil liberties,
Empower democracy and bolster community.
Together we must be intolerant
To intolerance or accept that the consequences
Will continue in the form of erosion
Of global stability, ultimate implosion
Of the way of life that in the West we’ve grown used to
So don’t snooze dude or risk losing the few
Liberal democracies still out there flourishing
Can’t take ‘em for granted, they need nourishing
Via a diet of truth and facts
Served up by journalists not under attack.
But who supports those journos?
Who so badly need to print their words so, ergo
Independent publishers also key
Small newspapers for many ethnicities
And universities, printed uncensored
By independent printing presses whose efforts
Can’t be overlooked, clearly also key
Shout-out Web Express out in BC,
And others of their ilk, providing an alternative
To corporate media, whose real purpose is
To turn profit, not freedom of the press
Keep that in mind and let’s help ‘em in their quest.
